Banner Printing Options: Materials, Sizes, and Finishes
Banner printing is not one-size-fits-all. Material choice depends on location, weather, display hardware, and how long the sign must last. Below is how each Banners.com option performs.
Vinyl Banners PrintingCustom vinyl banner printing on 13 oz scrim vinyl is lightweight, vivid, and versatile: grand openings, gyms, schools, political campaigns, and storefront promos. Matte and gloss finishes are available. Heat-welded hems and grommets are included at no extra charge—from accent sizes up to 16′ × 50′ large format.
14 oz No-Curl Vinyl
For retractable banner stands and X-frame displays, standard vinyl can curl at the edges over time. The 14 oz no-curl vinyl is engineered with a stiffer substrate that holds flat after being rolled inside a stand. This material is the preferred choice for trade show displays, reception areas, and retail point-of-sale signage where appearance needs to stay polished through repeated setup and takedown.
Mesh Banners Printing For Wind
Perforated mesh reduces wind load on fences, scaffolding, and sports perimeters. Air passes through instead of pushing against ties and grommets—critical for long outdoor runs.
Fabric Banners
Fabric yields a smooth, upscale look for indoor events, photo backdrops, and premium retail. It folds without cracking and washes gently for reuse.
Finishes and Hardware CompatibilityStandard finishing: hemmed edges and grommets every 2–4 feet by size. Add pole pockets, reinforced corners, double-sided prints, or retractor-specific tape per product. Details:

How to Design a Banner for Printing
Strong custom banner printing starts with display context. A banner read from 50 feet needs larger type and simpler graphics than one viewed at arm’s length.
Set up at the correct dimensions
Build files at finished size, or scale down (1″ = 1′) at 300 dpi for equivalent 100 dpi at full size—standard for large banner printing.
Use high-contrast colors
Dark backgrounds with light text, or bold solids, improve distance legibility. Avoid hairline fonts and fine detail that disappear at scale.
Keep the message concise
One headline, one support line, one call to action. Name + tagline + phone or URL is a proven layout for business banner printing.
Outline fonts and embed images
Convert type to outlines/curves. Embed linked assets so production renders correctly.
Respect safe zones and bleed
Keep critical content 2″ from edges on grommeted vinyl. Add bleed where designs run to the trim (especially for stand graphics).
How to Install a Banner After Printing
Installing a banner correctly protects the material and ensures it stays secure through its intended use period. The right method depends on where the banner is being mounted.
Hanging with Grommets
Grommets are brass-reinforced holes spaced along the edges of the banner. Use bungee cords, rope, or S-hooks to attach the banner to a fence, frame, pipe, or wall anchor. For outdoor banners in wind-prone areas, attach at every grommet point rather than skipping grommets. This distributes load evenly and prevents tearing.
Retractable Banner Stands
Insert the banner tape at the bottom of the banner into the stand's cassette slot. The banner rolls down from the top. Most retractable stands include a support pole that locks into a foot at the top of the banner. Setup and takedown typically takes under two minutes.
X-Frame and L-Banner Stands
X-frame stands use corner pockets or grommets to tension the banner across an X-shaped frame. Pull each corner to the frame hook before securing the center connections. The banner should be taut but not over-stretched.
Pole Pocket Banners
Slide a pole or dowel through the sewn pocket along the top (and sometimes the bottom) of the banner. Hang from the pole ends using end caps, hooks, or a bracket system. This method is common for pole banners mounted to light poles or building facades.
Storage After Use
Roll vinyl banners around a cardboard tube rather than folding them flat. Folding creates permanent crease lines that are visible when the banner is displayed again. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. Fabric banners can be folded and stored in the carry bag typically included with fabric display systems.
