Every banner print starts with a material choice, and each of the three primary options serves a distinct set of use cases. For a broader overview, see our
types of banners material comparison guide. Here is what each one is and where it performs best.
13 oz and 18 oz Vinyl Banners
Vinyl is the most widely used banner material, and for good reason. The 13 oz matte vinyl is the standard for storefronts, grand openings, schools,
sports teams,
churches, and events. It balances sharp print quality, weather resistance, and affordability. A 13 oz vinyl sign holds up 3 to 5 years outdoors and longer indoors when stored properly. A 13 oz gloss option is available for designs that benefit from a high-shine finish.
When you need to
print vinyl banners for a campaign or recurring event, tiered pricing makes volume orders economical. Our
printed vinyl banners use UV-resistant inks for bold color that holds up in sun and rain. See

The
18 oz blockout vinyl steps up the durability for permanent installations. Described as our toughest banner material, it resists tearing and abrasion better than the 13 oz, features a blockout core that prevents light bleed-through, and supports true double-sided printing. It is the right choice when a sign will face continuous outdoor exposure for more than a year or will be handled frequently.
Mesh Vinyl Banners
Mesh banners are printed vinyl banners built on a scrim-reinforced PVC mesh substrate with a 70/30 vinyl-to-hole ratio. That perforated structure allows 37% airflow through the material, which dramatically reduces the wind load on mounting points. Solid vinyl mounted on a fence acts like a sail; mesh lets the wind pass through.
The tradeoff is approximately 30% less fine-detail visibility compared to solid vinyl. Small text and intricate logos do not read well on mesh. Bold graphics, large type, and strong color blocks print clearly at the typical outdoor viewing distances mesh banners are designed for. The standard viewing distance calibration for mesh is 25+ feet, with an up-close option at 10+ feet and a distant option at 50+ feet. Outdoor lifespan is up to 2 years with proper installation and storage, shorter than solid vinyl due to the increased surface area exposed to UV and wind cycling.
Soft Polyester Fabric Banners
Fabric banners are printed on a soft polyester substrate with a matte, low-glare finish. That finish eliminates the reflection problems that vinyl can create under stage lighting, retail overhead lights, or photography setups. The result is a clean, professional appearance that reads well on camera and looks polished in person.
Fabric is the standard material for trade show backdrops,
retractable banner stand graphics, X-frame displays, and retail in-store signage. Sizes range from 24" x 24" up to 58" x 240" on standard SKUs. Pair fabric graphics with a
step and repeat banner for branded event photography walls.
Custom canvas banner printing follows the same production process, with the canvas material offering a slightly heavier hand and texture that works well for decorative or artistic applications. Fabric banners are not designed for extended outdoor exposure; for outdoor signage, choose vinyl or mesh.
